Albert Barnes was a notable Presbyterian preacher, but his reputation rests chiefly on his expository works, which are said to have had a larger circulation both in Europe and America than any others of their class. His Notes on the Old and New Testaments are said to have exceeded a million volumes in distribution by 1870 and countless more since then.

Even today, 150 years after most of them were published Barnes' Notes are still a staple of many minister's and believer's bookshelves. Barnes had a "knack" for stating complicated things simply, and this undoubtedly contributes to his Notes' wide distribution.
